'SANDF soldier shot himself, not murdered'

The defence force has corrected an earlier statement, saying Thabiso Zulu shot himself.

JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on Tuesday apologised for confusion surrounding the death of a soldier during a training exercise at the weekend, saying it has now emerged he shot himself.

Private Thabiso Zulu was taking part in Operation Corona on the border between South Africa and Mozambique.

Initially, it was reported Zulu was involved in a fatal shooting incident while on duty inside the Kruger National Park.

But on Tuesday, SANDF spokesman Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga said that is not what happened.

"They were just about to go for their patrol and apparently he shot himself dead. He was not shot at."

Mabanga has since apologised for any inconvenience caused.
