CAPE TOWN - Western Province flank Schalk Burger is back on the training field.

The 30-year-old has been out for nearly a year and half with various injuries and illnesses.

Burger started on field training with Western Province on Tuesday.

However, it is unclear when he will make a return to the playing field.

His troubles started in the first game of last season where he injured his knee.

He then started training and was scheduled to be ready for this season, but had to remove a cyst pressing against his spinal cord in March which lead to him contracting bacterial meningitis.

He spent quite some time in hospital before recovering and beginning with his rehab.

Meanwhile, Western Province will face the Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday in the Currie Cup competition.
