CAPE TOWN - Statistics released by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) shows the Western Cape has the highest incidence of police rape cases.

A total of 10 officers have been arrested in connection with rape over the past year in the province in comparison to only 12 arrests for the rest of the country.

The IPID website shows most of the 10 cases were reported outside of Cape Town in areas including Robertson, Paarl and Langebaan.

At least 3 incidents were recorded in Worcester alone.

Statistics revealed that only 12 policemen were arrested for rape in the other eight provinces in the past year.

In the latest incident in the Western Cape, a special task force captain was apprehended for allegedly raping a sex worker just over a week ago.

IPID's Moses Dlamini said the investigation continues as the officer faces charges of rape and assault.
