CAPE TOWN - As severe weather lashes the Cape peninsula, disaster officials remain on high alert.

A cold front has brought with it heavy rains and strong winds raising fears of flooding in some areas including informal settlements.

Cape Town Disaster Risk Management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said, "Disaster teams will remain on high alert for the remainder of the week as more heavy rains are expected."

Stella Maake from the South African Weather Service said the cold and wet conditions will persist for much of the week.

"We have another frontal system with rains on Wednesday night and on and off rains on Thursday. This system should clear up by Friday."
