4-month-old recovering after rape surgery
The infant and a seven-year-old boy were sexually assaulted on a farm in the Ceres area.
CAPE TOWN - The Red Cross Childrens Hospital says a four-month-old baby girl who was raped in Ceres is slowly recovering after undergoing further surgery.
She remains in a stable condition. It is understood the suspect entered their Wendy house on Vredebes Farm where he woke the boy up after he snatched the baby girl who was asleep nearby.
When the boy tried to alert his family, the suspect apparently strangled him. He then took the children to a nearby vineyard where he raped them and fled.
After the ordeal, the boy carried the child back to his home and told relatives about what happened.
The hospital's Lauren O'Conner-May says this is the baby's fourth operation.
"Doctors say she will undergo several more surgeries."
O'Conner-May says it's going to be difficult to determine the length of time the child will stay in hospital due to thorough medical processes involved.
She added, "It's difficult to say how long she will be here because it depends on how she heals because every child heals differently."
Police have released an identikit of a possible suspect, but no arrests have been made.
