JOHANNESBURG - Agang leader Mamphela Ramphele says Women's Day is about honouring and celebrating women and acknowledging their contribution to society.

Yesterday, marked the 57th anniversary of the women's march to the Union Buildings against pass laws.

She says the playing fields have to be levelled.

"It is also a day to re-dedicate ourselves to the principle of gender equality and the freedom of women."

Ramphele says although there is a fair representation of women in civil society organisations and corporate businesses, society still breeds a culture of male dominance over women.

"It is very important to have that transformation of the relationship between men and women and tap more into the feminine power."

Ramphele says the extent of violence against woman in South Africa is a disgrace. Numerous women's day celebrations were held across the country on Friday.

Ramphele spent the day in Sharpeville where she visited families in the area and addressed the community saying;

"More women and children are dying of sexual violence today than at any given time in the history of this country."
