UJ student shot in attempted robbery
The student was wounded during an attempted robbery outside UJ's Doornfontein Campus.
JOHANNESBURG - A student from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) was shot and wounded during an attempted robbery outside the facility's Doornfontein Campus on Tuesday night.
The 30-year-old student apparently went to get food just after 8pm on Tuesday night.
He was walking back to campus from a fast food outlet in the area when he was attacked by an unknown number of suspects.
The university says he was shot in the chest and security on campus called emergency services for assistance.
The student was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently in a stable condition.
While the incident didn't happen on university grounds, it comes nearly a week after a female student was kidnapped from UJ's Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park and robbed.
Last week, a 23-year-old student told Eyewitness News that she was tied up and forced into the boot of her own car on campus by an armed man who drove out and drew cash from her bank accounts.
Police have since arrested an 18-year-old man, who is a first year student.
CCTV footage shows a man covering his face and leaving the campus through the entrance when the boom was still up after another car entered the premises.
Her car was recovered later that day and the suspect arrested after he dropped her off near Eldorado Park.
