JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding a school bus accident in northern Johannesburg on Monday morning.

Thirty-eight children from Witkoppen Primary School were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the bus veered off the road and crashed into a ditch near the intersection of Witkoppen Road and Waterford Drive.

The department's Gershwin Chuenyane said it had suspended its contract with the company pending the outcome of a full investigation.

"The investigation will include a road worthy test of all busses belonging to the company."

The nearly 50-seater bus was overloaded with around 100 school children on board.

One child remains in hospital, while the other pupils involved are receiving trauma counselling.

Meanwhile, the bus driver maintains the bus was roadworthy.

"I drive this bus every day. I have had no problems with this bus," he said at the scene on Monday.
