SA's oldest fast-bowler turns 102
Acclaimed former Transvaal cricketer Norman Gordon celebrates his birthday today.
JOHANNESBURG - Norman Gordon may have only played five tests for South Africa but he continues to be celebrated for an enduring innings of a different kind.
Gordon raised his bat again on Tuesday as he marked his 102nd birthday. The former Transvaal fast bowler is the oldest-ever Test match cricketer.
Gordon was bowled over with well wishes and messages of congratulations on his special day - and even South African cricketing icon Ali Bacher popped by for a visit.
He says he's disappointed with the way the game has evolved in recent years.
"Well... I am very unhappy with everything except test cricket. They just don't make the strokes like the wonderful cricketers used to."
Gordon doesn't only appreciate the sound of the red leather ball being dispatched by solid willow; he also spends some of his time enjoying golf in the comfort of the Houghton club.
