We have a very strong base - De Klerk
The Lions are not planning to go on a shopping spree after being promoted to Super Rugby.
JOHANNESBURG - Kevin De Klerk has told EWNSport that he would prefer to work on his current base of players than go out and buy a string of new players.
The Golden Lions have been promoted to Super Rugby in 2014 following an aggregate win over the Kings this weekend.
This has resulted in speculation over which players they will be interested in.
De Klerk says development within is key.
"We will be going out to look for a few people and the guys have told me that we have a very strong base and we must rather look within. We have great players. We have a great coach and great support staff. Obviously there'll be one or two gaps that we'll be looking at."
De Klerk says everyone at the union is feeling like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
"We're obviously very elated and relieved. It's been a tough year. I think these last two weeks have been enormously stressful."
De Klerk paid tribute to the die-hard Lions fans who have stuck by them.
"We're extremely grateful to our wonderful supporters. We again applaud them. This is by and large for them as well."
The Johannesburg side is now preparing for its first Currie Cup game on Saturday.
They will take on the Cheetahs at Ellis Park Stadium at 3pm.
