JOHANNESBURG - Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi defended his reputation after allegations emerged on Saturday that he raped a colleague in January.

Vavi strongly denied the rape allegation made by the woman he admitted to having an affair with.

The trade union federation leader claims the woman demanded R2 million from him in exchange for her to never speak about the matter again.

Vavi turned to social network Twitter to apologise to the public after it emerged that he was unfaithful to his wife.

He tweeted, "I am only human and fallible. I am no saint."

He also said he has apologised profusely to his wife for having an affair.

Eyewitness News understands the implicated woman will wait for an internal investigation to conclude before stating her side of the story.

The woman apparently stayed away from her job at Cosatu because she feared it would happen again.

POLITICAL CAMPAIGN

Vavi has claimed several times he is the victim of a political campaign that is being driven by those who supported President Jacob Zuma at the ANC's Mangaung conference in December.

It seems he may view parts of what is happening around the alleged rape to be linked to that claimed campaign.

Vavi has said several times he will resign if any proof emerges of wrong doing against him.

This scandal might be enough to force him to step down. But if he does resign then Cosatu will be seen to have lost one of its biggest political figures while Zuma's supporters will feel they have no internal opponents.

Meanwhile, South Africans took to social networks to voice their opinions on the matter.

Thido ‏tweeted, "#Vavi should step down, but then again Zuma didn't so why should he?"

Anele Mkabayi Mda also tweeted "Mbulelo Goniwe got fired having slept with NO one simply because he was standing in the way of those who wanted him out #LestWeForget #Vavi"

While Liabo Setho wrote "The simplest trap u can set for most men whether powerful or not, is a skirt. #vavi"
