Suspected serial rapist found dead
The man who was facing 122 charges including rape and kidnapping has allegedly taken his own life.
JOHANNESBURG - The man accused of raping 34 minors in the East Rand has allegedly committed suicide ahead of his court appearance on Thursday morning.
Details are still sketchy, but it is believed Sifiso Makhubo took his own life by hanging himself.
A prosecutor says he is still awaiting further information about the incident.
It is not clear when Makhubo killed himself, but court proceedings have been adjourned until official confirmation from Johannesburg police.
Makhubo was supposed to stand trial for various charges, including rape and kidnapping.
He also faces charges of attempted murder after he allegedly infected his victims with HIV.
Police are now investigating the exact circumstances around his death.
The 42-year-old had been expected to plead to the charges against him in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The crimes took place in Kathorus, east of Johannesburg between 2006 and 2011, when the man was arrested.
