Cops investigating alleged rapist's suicide

JOHANNESBURG - Police have opened an inquest docket into the death of alleged serial rapist Sifiso Makhubo who committed suicide just hours before the start of his Thursday morning trial.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed his suicide.
It's understood he hanged himself with a blanket late on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning at the Johannesburg Prison.
Makhubo was meant to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Thursday to face 122 charges relating to rape, attempted murder and kidnapping.
He also faced charges of attempted murder after he allegedly infected his victims with HIV.
He was accused of raping 34 children and two women in 2006 before his arrest five years later.
The alleged crimes took place in Kathorus, east of Johannesburg, between 2006 and 2011 when he was arrested.
Witnesses who were meant to testify have now been sent home.
