'Rheenendal crash reconstruction shoddy'

The Rheenendal crash victim’s families say the accident reconstruction was appalling.

CAPE TOWN - The lawyer representing the families of the Rheenendal school bus crash victims believe an accident reconstruction expert has given an abysmal account what happened on the day of the tragedy.

An inquiry into the fatal accident resumed in the Knysna Magistrates' Court on Monday.

14 school pupils and a bus driver were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a river in August, 2011.

Lawyer Jerald Andrews said the accident scene expert's evidence was shoddy.

"He didn't consult or even make an effort to read the affidavits or witness statements of the surviving passengers. He didn't take into account that the bus was overloaded. I don't know how he could have reconstructed the whole thing and then come in and testify."

Three more witnesses are expected to be called to the stand when the matter continues in court on Tuesday.
