Eerste River home invaders evicted
Authorities have evicted a group of Gugulethu residents’ illegally occupying empty houses.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Human Settlements Department has evicted a group of Gugulethu residents who were illegally occupying privately built houses near Eerste River.
On Sunday the department told Eyewitness News that of the 800 units built more than two years ago, 600 were given to residents for free and the rest bonded.
The illegal occupants however also want to claim the bonded units for free.
The group occupied the houses on Saturday.
Provincial Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela said the group vandalised some of the units.
"I was there this morning and I saw for myself the damaged they'd caused. Fortunately law enforcement managed to evict all of them."
