Carrim grabs bull by the horns
Communications Minister Yunus Carrim takes the SABC's problems head on.
CAPE TOWN - Communications Minister Yunus Carrim appears to be moving quickly to address problems at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
Carrim and his deputy met with the public broadcaster's board, management and trade unions on Wednesday.
The newly appointed minister took over the portfolio after Dina Pule was axed during President Jacob Zuma's recent cabinet reshuffle.
Carrim said he wanted to hear about the SABC's challenges, whether there's been any progress since the interim board was appointed and how the department can help the broadcaster to become more stable and effective.
He said they have agreed to urgently address problems in filling senior management posts.
The SABC and the department have set up a joint task team that will work towards finalising the issues agreed to at the meeting.
They will then report back to the minister in two weeks.
In March, Parliament disbanded the SABC's board after the majority of them resigned, laying bare the acrimonious relationship between Carrim's predecessor, Pule and the public broadcaster.
An interim board was then appointed.
