'Rapist' cop could face more charges
The 41-year-old warrant officer, who is accused of rape, appeared in court on Tuesday.
CAPE TOWN - A Paarl court hearing the bail application of a policeman who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl, has heard there may be more victims.
The Mbekweni warrant officer appeared in the Paarl Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing five counts of rape of a minor.
Courtroom D was packed with mostly family members of the 41-year-old policeman.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)'s Lusanda Booi asked for more time to follow up on further information she received over the weekend.
Booi says they are still waiting for a blood sample of the accused to be taken at a local hospital and they will have to wait another two days to get the results.
Booi adds she has been in contact with three other minor girls who may have been victims of similar offences by the accused. Two of the girls live in Porterville and the other in Paarl.
Meanwhile, the officer's family has rubbished the claims against him. The family believes it is an attempt to tarnish his good name.
At the same time, several incidents of rape have been reported throughout the country in recent months.
Government has called on men to be active in the fight against the rape scourge.
