Lady Gaga suspends Twitter account
The pop star has provided no explanation for the move, but many believe it is a publicity stunt.
JOHANNESBURG - Pop star Lady Gaga has temporarily shut down her Twitter account, leaving tens of millions of "Little Monsters" wondering why.
The description on her profile simply states, "This interface has been shut down temporarily. Please check back for updates."
The Born This Way singer is the second most-followed person on the micro-blogging site with over 39 million followers, trailing Canadian pop star Justin Bieber by around 2 million.
There has been no official statement on the reasons for the move.
Many suspect it is in preparation for the launch of her fourth studio album, ARTPOP, due out later this year.
The singer cancelled a number of tour dates in February when she was forced to undergo hip surgery after developing synovitis, a condition involving the inflammation of joints in the body.
She has since been recovering and working on the new album.
Gaga is also due for her debut film appearance in October with the release of Machete Kills, an action film written and directed by Robert Rodriguez.
She will be acting alongside the likes of Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas.
The film is a sequel to the 2010 film Machete starring Lindsay Lohan, who will not appear in the sequel.
Gaga tweeted in December saying a documentary film will also be released this year, which said would be "documenting my life, the creation of ARTPOP + you!"
The documentary is being made by photographer Terry Richardson who has collaborated with the star in the past.
