JOHANNESBURG - Metrobus workers on Monday gathered outside the company's depot in the city centre to protest against what they called "a violation of company policies".

Workers embarked on an indefinite strike, demanding that Metrobus acting managing director Lawrence Maqekoane be suspended.

Drivers affiliated to South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) said the company was riddled with corruption since Maqekoane took office in 2012.

Samwu's Phanuel Tshikovha says they are also opposed to the bus operator's implementation of behavioural assessment when employing new staff.

"We are saying the behavioural assessment is illegal. It must be stopped."

Scores of Johannesburg commuters were inconvenienced by Monday's interruption.
