JOHANNESBURG - The South African Reserve Bank on Sunday said there were no general security problems with the new Mandela bank notes.

Reports have indicated the new notes security thread was believed to be easy to counterfeit but the Reserve Bank says this is not true.

According to the bank's Hlengani Mathebula, there were isolated complaints about the low denomination notes.

He said if people were experiencing issues with the notes - it is because they were overused.

"We've had complaints from people that have had the note for a very long time. Obviously if the note has been over used, its quality will start deteriorating."

The new R200, R100, R50, R20, and R10 notes show Mandela's face on the front, and the Big Five animals, on the back.

The new notes came into circulation late in 2012.
