Rosebank market evicted
Despite a victory on appeal, the Rosebank Rooftop Market is being evicted.
JOHANNESBURG - Traders at the Rosebank Rooftop Market on Wednesday accused mall owners of tearing a family apart.
Hyprop Investments Limited, which owns the market, shut down the 20-year-old trading hub to make way for the construction of a new Woolworths store.
Market coordinators said it was highly unlikely they will be open on Sunday, despite an appeal victory declaring that Hyprop had no right to close the market.
Some 400 small businesses have been jeopardised due to the eviction.
Estelle Kotze has been working at the market for over 12 years.
She has been angered by the company's behaviour.
"They are so selfish and so greedy, they don't think about the common person on the ground and that's what hurts most. They're not giving everybody a fair chance."
