Prayer at Luthuli House for Madiba

Joburg CBD came to a standstill for a few hours as a crowd prayed for Madiba outside Luthuli House.

ANC members held a prayer service outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg to wish Nelson Mandela well while he's recovering in a Pretoria hospital. EWN's Gia Nicolaides reports.

JOHANNESBURG/PRETORIA - The ANC has once again called for unity at a prayer service for Mandela in the Johannesburg city centre.

Madiba is spending his 25th day in hospital for a recurring lung infection.

Businesses came to a halt for about an hour in the central business district while the ruling party held a prayer service for the 94-year-old outside the party's Luthuli House headquarters.

ANC National Chairperson Baleka Mbethe says South Africa is not ready to let go of Madiba.

"We love him and we want him to remain with us forever."

Mbethe says they will start putting up get well banners across the city, "So that all may continue to draw inspiration from him."

Madiba remains in a critical but stable condition as well wishes continue to pour in from across the nation and the world.

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says growing old is not a curse but a blessing and the ruling party is not tired of having an old leader.

Its been another quiet day at the hospital where the former president has been receiving treatment for a recurring lung infection.

Madiba's former physician Vejaynand Ramlakan spent about an hour at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

While it appears no relatives have arrived at the facility, it is understood Madiba's wife Gra├ža Machel is sleeping at the hospital.

Members of the police's personal protection services made a turn past the tribute wall again, where they sang a hymn before returning to their offices about a block away.

The wall continues to draw attention from ordinary South Africans, who lay flowers and leave messages wishing the 94-year-old well on his 25th day in hospital.

On Monday, the Presidency released a statement saying the former statesman remained critical but stable.

This is Madiba's fourth hospitalisation since December.
