Significant drop in shack fire deaths
Around eight people have died in shack fires this winter compared to 103 last year.
JOHANNESBURG - The number of people who have died from shack fires in Gauteng this winter has been significantly reduced, Johannesburg Emergency Management Services's (EMS) Robert Mulaudzi said on Monday.
At least eight people have died in shack fires in informal settlements this winter, in comparison with 103 deaths for last year's winter period.
Mulaudzi says although Johannesburg EMS is not pleased with the number of people who died this winter, the number of deaths has greatly decreased.
He says communities to look after their appliances to avoid fire incidents.
"We encourage people to look after their eating and lighting appliances like your paraffin stoves, candles and electrical heaters."
Two men died over the weekend in separate incidents after their shacks caught alight.
