FIFA gives Bafana a fighting chance
Ethiopia's match against Botswana has been forfeited.
JOHANNESBURG - FIFA has confirmed the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player in their 2014 World Cup qualifier against Botswana.
The match has now been forfeited and awarded to Botswana as a 3-0 victory. As a result, Bafana Bafana is now two points behind Ethiopia in Group A.
In order for Bafana to make it through to the next round of qualifiers, it will need to beat Botswana and hope that the Central African Republic beats Ethiopia.
Coach Gordon Igesund says the announcement is good news for the team.
"The rules are the rules and all countries have to apply those rules. It gives us a bit of hope and we will go into the game against Botswana knowing we have to win."
The football governing body has also fined the EFF R60,000.
It's believed that Ethiopian midfielder Manyahile Beyene should have sat out their away game in Lobatse after receiving yellow cards in previous matches away to South Africa and against Botswana at home.
FIFA also opened disciplinary proceedings against Togo and Equatorial Guinea.
Bafana will play Botswana in September.
