Top cop to be buried today
Nathi Mthethwa is expected to speak at the funeral of top Gauteng policeman Tirhani Maswanganyi.
JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa is expected to speak on Thursday morning at the funeral of top Gauteng policeman Tirhani Maswanganyi.
The officer was murdered and dumped along a road outside Pretoria more than a week ago.
A reward of up to a R100,000 has been offered for any information leading to arrests.
The motive for the murder remains unknown and police aren't speculating whether it was linked to his work.
Mthethwa's spokesman Zweli Mnisi said, "The minister is expected to pay tribute to Maswanganyi because he was a cop who worked hard, fearlessly and selflessly for the safety of Gauteng. He will also raise the issue of the surge in police killings and call on society to help end this."
The funeral service is being held at the Hammanskraal Detective Academy while a burial will follow at the Acacia Park Cemetery.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros has said he's confident the case will be solved.
The police have yet to make any arrests.
