Igesund picks young Cosafa Cup team
Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund looks to develop new talent at the Cosafa Cup.
JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has named a 20-man squad to travel to Zambia for the Cosafa Cup.
The coach says he is using the tournament to introduce new players as part of his preparation for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Orlando Pirates players have been excluded from the squad because of the club's Champions League commitments.
Igesund says the tournament is a good training ground for young, inexperienced players with potential.
"Some players may not quite be ready for the senior national team right now, but they still have to be given opportunities, otherwise they'd never get a chance to play. It depends of course on the importance of the game.
"It's up to us now to get them ready, to give them as much game time as we can, when we can and every opportunity we get."
Igesund says this is an opportunity for players who have been knocking on the national team door to make an impression.
The Bafana coach included new faces such as Ronwen Williams, Jabulani Shongwe and Tshepo Gumede.
Igesund is confident the players he selected will bring success for the national team in future.
