JOHANNESBURG - The ruling party on Saturday said it is not concerned that newly appointed ANC Chief Whip Stone Sizani's wife is reportedly facing 30 charges of fraud and money laundering, totalling around R1.3million.

Nontuthuzela "Pankie" Sizani was arrested in Port Elizabeth in December, the Saturday Star newspaper revealed.

She will go on trial in August.

The charges date back to the time when she headed the municipality's early child development unit.

She is accused of creating "ghost teachers" and then pocketing their salaries.

The ANC said it is quite comfortable, as the chief whip himself is not the person in court.

Sizani, a former United Democratic Front member, was appointed to the post on Thursday.

He takes over from Mathole Motshekga, who was recalled by the ANC.
