Agang ready to launch
The country’s newest political party, Agang SA, will officially launch later on Saturday.
JOHANNESBURG - The country's newest political party, Agang SA, will officially launch later on Saturday.
The party, led by struggle stalwart and academic Doctor Mamphela Ramphele, will likely have less than a year to build its structures and convince South Africans to vote for it in the 2014 elections.
Over the past few months, Ramphele has been travelling across the country to speak to communities and determine the party's policies.
Saturday's launch will take place at the Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria, with gates opening at around 9am.
Various musicians are set to perform.
Ramphele is expected to outline her party's plans during the official launch.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on Friday threw his support behind Ramphele, saying the country's politics will benefit from someone of her calibre, intellect and resourcefulness.
Ramphele has been a fierce critic of the ANC.
Questions have been raised about whether she has what it takes to make it in politics, to which she reportedly answered, "I've survived worse".
