JOHANNESBURG - Two people have been killed and two others have been seriously injured after a light aircraft crashed in Germiston, east of Johannesburg on Friday afternoon.

The plane went down on a mine dump near Barlow Road.

Emergency services are on the scene clearing the wreckage.

The two people who survived have been air lifted to hospital in a critical condition.

An employee at a mine dump in Germiston has described to Eyewitness News how he tried to save those trapped inside the plane.

JP Bezuidenhout says he saw the four-seater plane flying overhead.

"We were struggling to pick up the wing of the plane and the next moment it collided in the ground and the plane tipped over. We came running and called the emergency services and took the four people out of the plane."

Civil aviation authority investigators will start piecing together what led to the crash.

The identities of those who have died have not yet been released and it's not known whether their next of kin have been informed.
