Minister promises lottery tender will be fair

The new operator is expected to replace Gidani on 1 June 2015.

CAPE TOWN - Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies says he will ensure there is meticulous scrutiny of the appointment process of the country's next lottery operator.

The National Lotteries Board will have a new operator within two years and the tender process has officially been opened.

The new operator is expected to replace Gidani on 1 June 2015.

The licence for Gidani, the current lottery operator, expires in May 2015.

When the licence was first awarded to Gidani more than six years ago, there was a legal challenge by the previous operator Uthingo. That appointment process was declared flawed.

But Davies says this time round it will be done with great care.

"People from our country and outside will be watching us. The documentation that will be available for the bidders is identified in numerous important ways, outlining processes to be followed."

Davies says he wants a transparent process to prevent issues arising like when Gidani took over from Uthingo six years ago.

"There will be independent verification and audit processes conducted by a reputable and independent audit firm. We'll go through a number of important matters, including matters that were the subject of court processes."
