JOHANNESBURG - The Daily Maverick has retracted a controversial article it published about al-Qaeda in May.

The article by De Wet Potgieter was entitled 'Al-Qaeda: Alive and well in South Africa' and was posted on the _Daily Maverick _website.

Editors of the site say after an exhaustive internal process, they can now acknowledge that there were inaccuracies in relation to Farhad and Junaid Dockrat in the article and they wish to set the record straight.

They say they were not in possession of evidence to show that the Dockrats are linked to al-Qaeda or any other terrorist organisation.

They have apologised to the Dockrats and the Muslim community of South Africa and retract this allegation.

They have agreed to remove the article from their website.
