June 16, 1976 marked the start of a series of student protests against the system of Bantu Education.
But what does it to mean to modern day young South Africans?
Eyewitness News asked students at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha to reflect on that question.
"Youth day, to me, means freedom. Today I can go to a multicultural university."
"We can actually support our families. We can actually be free and express ourselves as young South Africans."
At the Walter Sisulu University student activism has led to chaotic protests.
Demonstrators went on the rampage earlier this year and destroyed campus property following clashes with management over funding.
