QUNU - As Nelson Mandela spends an eighth day in a Pretoria hospital a relative of his will be laid to rest in his rural village of Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on Saturday.

Florence Mandela died aged 97 last week.

There has been a sombre mood in Qunu, as the Mandela family prepare to bid farewell to one of the village's oldest residents.

A tent has been erected in the back yard of Florence Mandela's home, and several sheep have been slaughtered to feed the mourners who will be attending the funeral today.

Her granddaughter Tobeka said they would follow a traditional ceremony to say their final goodbyes to their grandmother.

"It's a belief that by slaughtering a cow or a sheep [the ancestors] are welcoming her at her new home.

Florence Mandela will be buried next to her husband and other members of the Mandela clan.

But as South Africa waits for more news about Madiba's condition, relatives have said they won't speculate about his health.
