George Bizos happy Madiba is recovering
Long-time friend and former lawyer to Nelson Mandela, George Bizos, is happy he is recovering.
JOHANNESBURG - Former President Nelson Mandela's close friend George Bizos on Saturday welcomed news that the he is doing better.
Madiba is undergoing treatment at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria for a recurring lung infection.
He was hospitalised a week ago when after being treated at his Houghton home in Johannesburg his condition deteriorated overnight.
The presidency has since said Madiba is in a serious but stable condition.
Bizos, who remains a long-time friend of the former statesman, told Eyewitness News he is happy to hear his friend is responding well to treatment.
"It's most welcome and we must trust the highly qualified and dedicated doctors that are looking after him."
Bizos represented Madiba at the Rivonia Trial where he and other political leaders were sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island for sabotage.
Meanwhile, at a funeral in the Eastern Cape on Saturday head of the Mandela family, Mandla told the community of Qunu that his grandfather's condition continues to improve.
The 94-year-old's cousin Florence died at the age of 97.
At the funeral a local reverend asked those in attendance to stand up for a moment of silent prayer.
"We are praying that [God] be next to him every minute."
Mandla, who is chief of the MvezoTraditional Council, thanked the nation for keeping Madiba in their prayers.
