Boks prepare for stern Scotland test
Jean de Villiers’ men take on Scotland in Nelspruit for the first time.
JOHANNESBURG - Springbok captain Jean de Villiers has rejected the notion that anything other than a big win over Scotland will be seen as a poor result.
De Villiers says that their performance against Italy has set a really high standard for the team.
"I've never played in a Test match where there hasn't been pressure. We want to improve, we want to get better, last week for us was the benchmark and we don't want to dip below that again."
The Bok captain says that Scotland coach Scott Johnson's team selection puts their performance in a tough position.
"In a way it's a lose-lose. If you say they've thrown in the towel and if we beat them by a big margin then it's a weak Scotland side. If we don't, then we haven't played well enough."
There are seven changes to the Scotland side to play the Springboks in Nelspruit on Saturday. This after the Scots suffered their first loss against a strong Samoan side in Durban.
Greig Laidlaw leads the side in the absence of Kelly Brown who's returned home injured, he'll once again take on the kicking duties with Ruaridh Jackson starting at flyhalf.
There are Test debuts for Peter Murchie at fullback, Tommy Seymour at wing and Tim Swinson at lock.
Johnson has conceded that Scotland are using this tour in a 'development capacity' - hence the raft of changes.
"Some of the changes we had already predicted to make sure that we'd see most of the people on tour. We picked a couple of people for South Africa and they're lining up - they knew well in advance."
Johnson says he was impressed with the Boks and their attacking mindset but believes they'll resort to type when the Rugby Championship comes around.
"They're preparing for the Rugby Championship themselves. They've picked a pretty quick team. I think they'll go to a traditional form in the Championship though. This is the time that they might chance their arm to develop their game but the Rugby Championship is a battle of attrition."
