CAPE TOWN - It has been nearly two weeks and there is still no word on the state of a South African couple being held captive in Yemen.

Pierre and Yolande Korkie from Bloemfontein were abducted by gunmen outside a hotel in the City of Taiz in May.

It has been reported the pair is being held by al-Qaeda, but the International Relations Department has yet to confirm this.

It will be two weeks on Sunday since the couple was kidnapped by armed men outside a Taiz Hotel.

It was initially thought the two were mistaken by their kidnappers to be either Americans or Europeans.

It then emerged they were caught up in a dispute about a piece of land earmarked for the development of a hotel.

Five people were arrested in connection with the couple's abduction, but they were later released.

The South African ambassador to Saudi Arabia has been struggling to secure the couple's release.

International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane addressed the media on Friday, saying the matter was sensitive and they were constantly engaging with the Yemeni government.
