Toddler rape suspect to go on trial in August
A 54-year-old man is accused of raping a four-month-old toddler.
CAPE TOWN - A Durbanville man accused of raping a four-month old baby is expected to stand trial at the end of August.
The 54-year-old man's trial was due to start in the Parow Regional Court on Tuesday, but was postponed as the magistrate who was meant to hear the matter was ill.
The suspect was arrested in October last year after an infant's persistent crying drew a traffic officer to check what was happening at a home in a Durbanville complex.
It reportedly took the man a while to answer the door as he claimed he had been sleeping.
During a previous court appearance in March the state alleged the child's mother had asked her male friend to babysit so that she could go out.
When the woman arrived back home she contacted the police as she suspected something was wrong with her little girl.
He was denied bail earlier this year.
