JOHANNESBURG - Police in the North West appealed to the public on Sunday not to take the law into their own hands.

A 25-year-old man was stoned to death in an apparent mob justice incident in Makfikeng, prompting the announcement by police.

The man allegedly stabbed and his girlfriend with a knife.

He then fled the scene.

Officials confirmed that two cases of murder have since been opened.

"Police appealed to the community to report cases of this nature, as arrests will be made," said the police's Pelonomi Makau.

"No one has been arrested so far and police continue investigating."
