Details of family murder shocks community
Two children managed to escape the attack and alerted neighbours to what was happening.
JOHANNESBURG - The Etwatwa community was on Sunday outraged, after a 14-year-old boy killed four of his family members in the early hours of Friday morning in Benoni, east of Johannesburg.
The boy butchered his mother, grandmother and his two siblings, one of whom was merely three-months-old, with an axe while asleep in their shack.
Officials said two children aged eight and nine managed to escape the attack and alerted neighbours.
Community member Andries Dlamini said they spared the boy's life, to get answers.
"The community really was thinking of killing him but according to the situation they said, 'no let's not kill the child because he's 16-years - and if we kill him, we could lose the information and he can give us the full story of what's happening'."
The boy was captured by community members hours after the incident and was handed over to the police.
He is expected to appear in court on Monday.
