JOHANNESBURG - Police on Friday arrested a 14-year-old boy after he allegedly killed four of his family members using an axe at an informal settlement, east of Johannesburg.

The teenager was arrested on Friday by community members at Etetwa just hours after the murders.

He is currently believed to be in police custody.

The 14-year-old is believed to have killed his mother, grandmother, seven-year-old brother and three-month-old sister while they were sleeping in their shack at the Etwatwa informal settlement on Friday.

"It is alleged that the suspect used an axe to kill them," said the police's Lungelo Dlamini.

"Thereafter he left and was arrested with the help of the community."

The teenager's two younger sisters aged eight and nine managed to escape and called the neighbours who then managed to track him down and hand him over to police.

It is still unclear what his motive was but police said he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
