CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court on Tuesday granted the City of Cape Town's application for an interdict to halt the proposed N1-N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project, pending the final determination of the City's review application.

The City of Cape Town went to court to halt the planned toll project, arguing that it is unnecessary and would place an undue burden on the economy and residents.

It also raised concerns about how South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) came to the decision to start the project in the first place and requested access to the relevant documentation, but the agency refused.

Tuesday's interdict not only halted the entire project, but the court also ordered that Sanral hand over he relevant documents.

Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Brett Herron said it was very good news.

"We're very pleased with the outcome of the decision and we will now proceed with the review application without Sanral having started construction."
