CANNES - Over US$ 1 million (R9 million) worth of jewels were stolen near the Cannes Film Festival.

French police said the jewels from one of the festival's main sponsors, Chopard, were taken from a hotel room of an employee who works for the Swiss jeweller.

The jewels were meant to be loaned to celebrities for daily red carpet premiers.

According to police, the goods were stolen from a safe in the Novotel Hotel, a short walk away from where the screenings take place.

The police are investigating the burglary, which took place on Thursday night.

Coincidentally, a film about high school students stealing luxury goods from celebrities premiered at the festival.
