JOHANNESBURG - Staff at a scrap metal company in Boksburg have been evacuated after radioactive material was found in one of its workshops on Thursday morning.

The area around the premises in Main Reef Road has been cordoned off as officials wait for the National Nuclear Regulator to get to the scene.

Officials say a six cubic metre bin was found inside a workshop at the Sarie Scrap Metal Company.

They say it belongs to another scrap company, SA Metals, from nearby Elandsfontein.

Emergency services' William Nthladi says radio activity levels beyond the limit of 200 have been detected.

"We have basically closed the whole area up. We are waiting for the personnel with the right protective equipment to arrive so they can access the area."
