R10m drugs bust in Boksburg
The Hawks shut down a massive drugs lab and seized R10m worth of mandrax and manfacturing equipment.
JOHANNESBURG - Authorities were on Wednesday hunting a third man after a massive drug bust in Boksburg on the East Rand.
In an operation between the Hawks, Sars and the East Rand K9 Unit, a massive drug lab was shut down and two men were arrested.
Drugs and manufacturing equipment worth around R10,5 million was seized.
The Hawk's Paul Ramaloko said, " Following up on information we dismantled the lab, confiscated mandrax and drug manufacturing equipment."
In January, the Anti Drug Alliance's annual survey and report revealed that one in three middle-class South Africans use an illegal substance for recreational purposes.
The survey was completed by 35,433 people online as well as 22,376 people through e-mail, phone calls and social media portals.
Meanwhile, according to the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre, substance abuse is now a problem in many rural communities.
The centre said many Cape communities were battling with high levels of drug abuse among the youth.
