Pupil dies after school shooting

CAPE TOWN - Spes Bona High School matric pupil Enrico Martin died at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday afternoon.

It is believed a gunman entered the school gates and shot the pupil in the head before fleeing the scene.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but many believe it may be gang-related.

The hospital's Alaric Jacobs said, "The patient was brought into Groote Schuur Hospital this morning. He was in a critical condition and he passed away this afternoon."

Officials are monitoring the situation at the Athlone school, Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant confirmed.

The MEC condemned the shooting.

"I'm concerned that this appears to be gang-related and the perpetrator was wearing school uniform."

Speaking to Eyewitness News , a pupil said he was still in shock after witnessing the shooting.

Quwin Bobber said he was preparing to go to class after the school bell rang when he heard the first shot being fired.

"The guy came from behind and shot him."

Bobber said he saw a man in casual clothes and a backpack fleeing the scene.

The learner added everyone at the school became hysterical.

Pupils who witnessed the shooting could be seen leaving the school premises in tears.

Meanwhile, police said they were searching for three men who allegedly shot and killed Martin.

The police's Fredrick van Wyk said, "Two of the suspects were carrying firearms. One of them fired at the victim who sustained a gunshot wound to the head. No arrests have been made as yet."
