‘The Spear’ vandal restores SA flag
Professor Barend le Grange has been spotted restoring a South African flag on the R24 highway.
JOHANNESBURG - A Kempton Park professor accused of defacing the controversial 'The Spear' painting has been spotted restoring a South African flag on the R24 highway near OR Tambo International Airport.
In 2012, Barend le Grange was caught on camera defacing the painting depicting President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed.
The defacing incident took place at Johannesburg's Goodman Gallery.
Le Grange is part of a group called Citizens in Partnership with Government, which is repainting worn out flags from the 2010 Fifa World Cup, along the stretch of highway.
This man drove past the area earlier and was surprised to see the professor cleaning up.
"That flag's state has deteriorated since the World Cup and he's now taken upon himself to clean up that area. He's going to repaint the flag and he's taken all the weeds out."
The organisation's Bheki Shongwe said after the flag is restored, a ceremony will take place to commend le Grange.
"There will be a ceremony that will be attendant by government officials to celebrate the completion of that flag."
