Dept. unveils Special Economic Zones Bill
The proposed law aims to identify and boost economic and export growth in South Africa.
CAPE TOWN - The Department of Trade and Industry on Friday revealed more details about a bill aimed at boosting economic and export growth in the country.
Minister Rob Davies briefed Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry in Cape Town on the proposed Special Economic Zones Bill.
The draft bill is aimed at identifying, developing and promoting special economic zones in the country.
The department said the so-called solar corridor in Upington and a proposed renewable energy project in Atlantis on the West Coast have been earmarked as possible zones.
In accordance with the bill, a fund and an advisory board to support these zones will be set up by Davies.
Countries like Poland and Indonesia already have such legislation.
The draft law must still jump through a few Parliamentary hoops and be sent out for public comment once again.
