The section under the railway bridge at New Canada Road, Soweto has once again been flooded due to heavy rains and three motor vehicles have already been washed away.

The road has since been closed to traffic while dozens of pedestrians wait for the rain to subside before passing through.

A man who was on his way to Highgate said he was shocked when he saw the damn of water.

"I failed to get there because of the flooding. I am now waiting for the rain to calm down so that I can pass through."

A white Golf that was washed away is still visible on the river banks.

But residents say the driver managed to escape.

Some homes in Orlando West have also been flooded but no injuries have been reported.

Meanwhile, motorists have been asked to avoid Witkoppen Road near Pritchard Street in Fourways after a section of a bridge partially collapsed due to the heavy downpours.

A woman who drove past the scene earlier spoke to Eyewitness New, "The tar road is collapsing as far as the middle line. Currently there are two police vans sitting there with their lights flashing."

Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said, "The bridge collapsed due to the heavy rains. Metro police have had to close to the road."
