Gigaba praises new SAA CEO
Minister Malusi Gigaba said new SAA CEO Monwabisi Kalawe is a “capable business leader”.
JOHANNESBURG - Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba on Friday said he would give his full support to new South African Airways (SAA) CEO Monwabisi Kalawe.
He will take over the position after several board members from the national carrier resigned or were suspended.
Kalawe has no experience in aviation, but was described as a "capable business leader".
He will have to manage the airline's complex turnaround strategy.
Gigaba wished Kalawe well, saying he would have to hit the ground running.
The minister said the new CEO had experience in both the public and private sectors.
"I trust that the board will work well with the CEO and that the management of the airline will welcome him."
Meanwhile, SAA said it managed to trim around R7 million during its previous financial year.
The airline said vacancies on the board would be filled soon.
