JOHANNESBURG - Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Thursday slammed anonymous individuals that leaked distorted and false information about meetings and decisions.

He was speaking at the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa)'s bargaining conference in Pretoria.

Vavi said he had become the target of a smear campaign.

This included allegations of corruption in an effort to destroy the organisation, he added.

The secretary general said the new enemy of the working class was identified from within their own ranks.

"The newspaper sources are a few senior leaders from our affiliated unions at the level of the president and general secretaries."

Vavi said these people used the media to execute their very clear mandate.

"[They] target the general secretary and smear him continuously in the newspapers until workers lose faith in him."

But Vavi warned they would not succeed because they did not have the support of union members.
